They say: "at New Year, whatever you wish for always comes true, everything always happens". I know this for certain, because something like this happened to me in my life...
It happened a long time ago, when I was a child. I had one best mate, Vova. We lived in the same house and were what you'd call "inseparable".
So, for New Year's, Vova invited me over to his place. But when I arrived, I saw he'd also invited other kids from our class. I was really upset and cross: "So I'm not his only friend?" — and I left without wishing him happy holidays.
So I just sat in my room, didn't even come out for the festive dinner — I was in such a foul mood.
And then I heard:
G'day. What are you doing here on your own? It's a celebration.
So what if it is. Maybe I've got troubles.
I said without even turning around.
What sort of troubles?
Something rustled nearby.
And then I saw before me a teeny-tiny little person. He was thin and sparkly, like a snowflake. And behind his back I saw two transparent little wings.
Who are you?
I was surprised.
I'm a snow angel. We come down to Earth only on New Year's night.
Why? And what for?
I asked with interest.
Because it's on New Year's night that people make their most secret wishes. And we're the very angels who make those wishes come true. So reckon you're lucky. Make a wish!
Nah, I don't have any wish… I really wanted to spend New Year's with Vova, but he invited all the kids from class. Turns out he's not my mate.
Who's this Vova then?
Asked the angel.
Vova... Well, how do I put it... Well, we're always together. Like, one time...
I thought for a moment and started remembering different stories about me and Vova. I was telling them, and the angel looked at me with his big kind eyes and smiled thoughtfully.
And the longer I talked, the clearer I understood how lucky I was to have a mate like Vova. And that Vova had a mate like me. How brilliant that we had each other.
I don't remember how I fell asleep, or where the snow angel went. I only remember thinking how good it would be if me and Vova had lots of mates like him and me.
I was woken by a knock on the window — we used to do that with Vova all the time: throw a snowball at the window. I went out to the yard, and in front of my porch in the snow I saw the imprint of a "snow angel", and next to it stood Vova with the kids from class:
Happy New Year, sleepyhead! We're going to the ice rink. Come with us!
Happy New Year, Vova. I'm coming!
I shouted and, grabbing my skates, ran out to the yard.
