One day Masha went into the wood,
A basket with her, as she should,
To gather mushrooms for her home
And flowers bright to freely roam.
But on the way she played and played,
Got lost and wandered, quite dismayed!
She couldn't find the path back home!
"Oh! Help me, legs, I'm all alone!"
She ran and saw a little shack!
Inside an ancient woman sat back
Who moaned and groaned and cried out loud.
She looked quite frightening, truth be avowed!
Her wooden leg would creak and squeak.
This was old Baba Yaga, bleak!
Masha went up to the door
And asked the old woman what was sore:
"Granny Yaga, what's the matter,
Why does your wooden leg so clatter?"
Yaga looked at Masha there
And said: "I'm ill beyond repair!
I cannot eat or drink a thing,
I cannot stand or even sing.
I'm too ashamed to even say,
I cannot eat you up today!!!"
Masha was a caring lass,
She wanted to help Yaga pass.
""You must take care of yourself well!
Come, Yaga, rest where you dwell!
I shall nurse you back to health,
So you'll live for ages yet!
For colds and sore throats, I declare,
Vitamins are just the care!
Cranberry tea, warm and sweet,
Raspberry, come help me treat!
Honey helps a cough, you see,
We must heat the bathhouse spree,
To warm your bones right through and through.
Rub your back with wax anew!"
Then the work began in earnest!
Before you could blink, the earnest
Old Baba Yaga stood up straight,
On her feet, no longer irate!
""Oh, thank you, Masha, thank you so!
I'm healthier now, with a glow!
I want to dance and sing with glee,
On my broomstick, flying free!
Tell me truly, if you please,
How can I repay you with ease?"
Masha spread her arms out wide:
""I want to go back home, inside,
To Mummy and to Daddy dear."
Baba Yaga, crystal clear,
In her mortar, swift and fast,
Took Masha home at last.
Mum and Dad were overjoyed,
Their daughter had returned, employed!
They praised their Masha, brave and true,
For helping Yaga through and through.
And Yaga, waving her hand high,
Flew back to the forest, to the sky.
That's our Masha, kind and bright.
