In a small town nestled in a beautiful scenic location, there lived a six-year-old girl named Lily. The town was quite small, with very few residents, and most surprisingly, there were no other children at all. Lily often felt sad, as she had never had the chance to play with other children in her life.
The girl lived with her mum and dad, who went to work every day and couldn't spend all day playing with their daughter. Lily also had a nanny who spent all her free time with her.
Since the girl had no friends her own age with whom she could share secrets and play fun games, she began growing flowers — lilies.
She created a beautiful flower bed where the most varied sorts of different colours grew. There were yellow ones, white ones, purple ones, pink ones, and even blue lilies, and the girl looked after them and watered them every day.
She loved her flowers so much that she called them her best friends, talked to them, and shared the most precious things in her heart.
Lily also desperately wished for a miracle to happen and for children to appear in her town, so she would have someone to play with.
She would come to the flower bed and tell the flowers:
My dear lilies, how I've missed you! How have you been getting on without me? What's happened to you whilst I was sleeping and having breakfast? You know, I dream so much about lots of children appearing in our town, so we could all come and visit you together.
One day, Lily, as usual after visiting her flower friends, went to her room. In the evenings, her nanny would read the girl a story, a different one each evening. Then Lily would settle down comfortably, her nanny would tuck her in with a soft blanket, and the girl would fall fast asleep thinking about her only true friends.
Morning came, and Lily woke up early as usual, went downstairs to the ground floor where a delicious breakfast prepared by her nanny awaited her.
Good morning! What a wonderful day! Nanny, have you been out to see my flowers yet? How are they without me?
The girl exclaimed.
Good morning, sunshine! No, I haven't been to the lilies yet, because you like to be the first to visit them and water each flower yourself.
Well then hurry up and feed me, Nanny, and I'll run to my friends!
Lily quickly ate the delicious cheese pancakes with jam that her nanny had prepared, and dashed off to visit her magnificent lilies.
Grabbing her watering can, the girl skipped over to the flower bed and called out:
How did you sleep, little flowers? Weren't you too cold?
The lilies merely swayed in the wind and didn't answer the girl. And suddenly, when Lily was watering one of the flowers, a gentle voice rang out:
Hello, beautiful Lily!
The girl didn't understand who was speaking to her, but the voice sounded quite childlike.
Who's there?
The girl asked thoughtfully.
It's me, the lily you're watering.
The gentle childlike voice replied.
Can this really be true? Or have I found myself in a fairy tale!? Can flowers actually talk?
Lily thought in amazement.
You look after us every day, water us, tell us interesting stories, and share your dreams with us. Now let us do something good for you and make your wishes come true!
Another voice was heard, it was another lily.
Lily turned round and suddenly saw a sandpit nearby, it was in the neighbouring garden where no one had ever lived before, the house had stood abandoned. In the sandpit, two children were playing — a boy and a girl, they were about six or seven years old, just like Lily.
Hello, Lily! Let's get to know each other! We're your new neighbours and now we'll be living here with our parents.
The boy suddenly called out.
Hello!
Lily replied thoughtfully.
She turned her head towards the flowers.
But how did you do this? How did you make it so that more children appeared in our town?
We saw how much you dreamt about this! When you told us about the fairy tales that your nanny reads to you before bed, we thought you didn't believe in miracles, or even in fairy tales. But amongst us there's a lily called Fairy Tale, it was she who made your dream come true, and now more children have appeared in this town.
The pink lily replied.
Lily couldn't contain her joy. She bent down to her flowers and kissed each one of them.
Which one of you is Fairy Tale?
The girl asked.
I am.
A wonderful voice was heard, gentle and tender.
Before the girl's eyes, a large turquoise lily suddenly bloomed, on whose stem there were more buds than any other.
From that day on, Lily became friends with the new children, who became her mates. But her former, best and truest friends — the flowers — Lily never forgot. She continued to look after them and hurry to them in the mornings, straight after waking up.
And Lily also understood that miracles do happen in the world, and in fact all the fairy tales that her nanny tells her before bed — they're all around us.
Read fairy tales and kindness will fill your souls.
