The day was drawing to a close and, as always, came bath time, a bedtime story and sweet sleep. But for some reason, the girl Evanphia couldn't seem to fall asleep at all. She tossed and turned from side to side, waiting for sleep that was taking its time.
Then a breeze slipped through the window, rustled the curtain and the door creaked open slightly. A black nose appeared—it was Toddy, the dog who carefully guarded Evanphia's sleep.
Oh, it's you?! I was just about to get a fright.
Said Evanphia. Just as she was about to adjust her pillow and settle down more comfortably, she noticed a bright ray of moonlight streaming through the gap in the curtain. It seemed to be smiling and inviting her to go upwards, to visit the moon. That would be absolutely wonderful, thought the girl.
Toddy rested his muzzle on the bed and said:
Climb on!
Evanphia was absolutely thrilled. Even though I'm only four, I'm not scared. Evanphia climbed onto the dog's back and… oh, what a miracle! There they were, already racing upwards, the breeze unravelling her plaits, the moonlight making her squint.
How beautiful!
Evanphia had barely spoken when the bright moonlight illuminated great clouds, and upon them sat many tiny, interesting, glowing little people with wings.
«Who could this be?» flashed through the girl's mind. In response to her silent question, she heard thin voices:
Greetings, little Evanphia! We are tiny moon fairies. Will you be our friend?
One of the tiny fairies flew up to Evanphia and blew a feather from the palm of her hand.
Catch it—if you want to see us, blow on the feather three times.
Said the little fairy.
Oh, this is a dream, of course it's a dream!
Said Evanphia. Then Toddy barked, and Evanphia opened her eyes. She was lying in her own bed, and beside her Toddy was wagging his tail.
Yes, it was a magical dream!
The girl said and threw back her blanket to get out of bed. She noticed a feather on her pillow, exactly like the one in her dream.
What is this?
Evanphia said in surprise.
It's simply a miracle!
Exclaimed the girl.
Now I shall believe in miracles. I wasn't wrong when I told Mummy that magic lives all around us. And this feather is proof of it.
She jumped down, slipped her feet into her slippers, and ran off happily to tell her mother.
Evanphia understood that great, interesting and exciting adventures awaited her ahead.
